The study material you have will assist you in preparing for the exam for the Certificate of Fitness for Fire Alarm Systems. The study material includes content from NFPA 72 (2010 edition), the new 2014 New York City Fire Code and the existing Fire Rules of the City of New York. The study material deals with all types of alarm systems. It is your responsibility to be aware of all rules and regulations of the City of New York that may apply to you regardless of whether they are presented in this material. You must become fully cognizant of the fire alarm system that is present at your location.

S-95 Application and Exam Requirements

All candidates must apply and pay for an exam before coming to the FDNY. It will take about 30 minutes to complete it. When applying, pay the $25 application fee online, or in person, one of the following way: Credit card (American Express, Discover, MasterCard or Visa), Debit card (MasterCard or Visa), In person: Personal or company check or money order (made out to the New York City Fire Department). All credit card payments will be charged 2% convenience fee.

The S-95 will consist of 35 multiple-choice questions, administered on a “touch screen” computer monitor. It is a limited time examination. Based on the number of questions, you will be given 53 minutes to complete the examination. A passing score of a minimum of 70% is required in order to earn a Certificate of Fitness. All questions on the Certificate of Fitness examination are multiple choice, and each question has four alternative answers. Only one of the four answers is correct for each question.

FDNY S-95 Duties and Limitations

S-95 Certificate of Fitness holders cannot perform smoke detector cleaning. S-95 Certificate of fitness holders are also prohibited from repairing a central station transmitter. S-95 Certificate of Fitness holders cannot install or modify any fire alarm system component. While an S-95 holder can visually inspect smoke detectors and other fire alarm system components, they cannot inspect, test or clean smoke detectors, maintain smoke detectors, or program, service, clean, test, repair and/or replace low voltage fire alarm system components.

Alarm Log Book Requirements

An alarm log book is to be kept on the premises, at the main fire alarm control panel in the building. An alarm log book will be a bound book (not spiral) with lined, consecutively numbered pages. The cover of the log book will be embossed with the words “ALARM LOG BOOK”, together with the name and address of the building. All information shall be written in ink and dated. Log books are to be kept for three (3) years from the date of the most recent entry. The alarm log book is to be separated into 4 distinct sections, with each section containing enough pages to allow for a minimum of one year of entries. The following log book entries are required and must be completed in all circumstances:

  1. Daily entries: Entries for each tour of duty: Each daily entry must include the name of the person who made the entry, the certificate of fitness number of the assigned fire and life safety director, if any, as well as the time each tour was commenced and terminated; all entries must be made in the alarm log book
  2. System off-line records: An entry shall be made in the alarm log book in all such cases stating the date and time the alarm system was off-line, the reasons for the off-line status, the identity and Certificate of Fitness number of the person who was notified at the central station (or other evidence of notification acceptable to the Fire Department), and the date and time the alarm system was returned to service.
  3. Activated alarm entries: In each situation described above, the entries shall include alarm activation date and time, the type and location of the device (e.g., smoke detector, 27th floor, elevator lobby), the likely cause of the alarm, and the Fire Department unit and officer responding.
  4. Entries of notifications: The date and time of notifications to the occupants of the premises regarding a malfunctioning, or improperly functioning alarm system.
