“At the end of their lives, all men look back and think that their youth was Arcadia”

As someone who’s just barley dipped my toes into the Leijiverse (Leiji Matsumoto’s MANY series which often have the same characters either as the leads or as cameos) I’ve quickly discovered something. While they do include recurring characters, such as Captain Harlock or Maetel from Galaxy Express 999, most series are NOT canon to each other and often contradict. With this in mind, Arcadia of my Youth isnt quite the Harlock origin story people may think it is. It’s simply the origin story for this timeline (consisting of this movie and a sequel series called Endless Orbit SSX). Regardless of that, this was…

Arcadia of My Youth is a very Leji Matsumoto story. To those who aren't aware of his (mostly) connected 70's Space Works - Galaxy Express 999, Captain Harlock, Emeraldas, Space Battleship Yamato - this means it contains several things - gorgeous retro style space imagery, men being very stoic and Manly, many of the women have interchangeable willowy designs, and a very strong sense of romanticism. Also, some iffy politics, depending on how much these things matter to you (addressed below).

Arcadia of My Youth was an attempt in the early 80s to relaunch the Captain Harlock franchise with a new movie, and one that would give Harlock, his crew, and his famous ship - the Arcadia - and a…

  • Review by Geoffrey Broomer ★★★½

Leiji Matsumoto is responsible for a number of prolific properties, including Space Battleship Yamato, Captain Harlock, and Galaxy Express 1999. While the multitude of Yamato media is relatively easy to follow – the others feature interconnecting casts, and have enough spinoff series and films, that it borders on the impenetrable. I have completionist tendencies that made passing interest in the artist’s works essentially impossible, and even now in the digital age with ready access, it’s still a dubious prospect. Reimagined origins, inconsistent continuity and alternative histories abound – so that none of them are as connected as they appear. Harlock is an epic that feels less like deciding the order to watch the Star Wars series in, than the debate…

Space captain Harlock, the latest in a family of proud aerial warriors, begins his journey to free the oppressed Earth from the despotic Illumidas Command.

This is a movie based on a long running Japanese TV anime. I think to get the most from this movie I would have had to have watched over 100 hours of episodes. Despite that I do love the animation style I was just a little confused as to what was happening. It was ok.

So, Harlock's ancestor was a German Iron Cross "to pay the rent", huh?

  • Review by Cinema_Strikes ★★½

The plot (a mish-mosh of origin stories for Leiji Matsumoto’s classic space pirates Captain Harlock and Queen Emeraldas and a thinly veiled, occasionally offensive allegory for the post-WWII occupation of Japan) is something of a sluggish mess and the animation is choppy, but the Matsumoto-inspired imagery is absolutely glorious.

Mai visto un film d'animazione così serioso, nessuna battuta, gag, scenetta goofy, bohh niente solo due ore di uomini alpha che si scannano

Even more than First of the North Star, this is soaked in _otoko no roman_.
After seeing this, I have a strong urge to stand by the sea in solitude, pondering the meaning of being a man.

The flag they handed you at birth will not shield you from this world.

Stand proud beneath the flag of your own making.
Have absolute faith in your course.
Don't let the fuckers get to you.

Leiji Matsumoto, to nobodies surprise, utterly based.

  • Review by Voc_17 ★★★★½

Captain Harlock, the ultimate symbol of freedom, eternal hope for the future and belief in the goodness of humanity, one of the most inspiring characters in the history of fiction and this film is a really excellent showcase of why I feel that way.

  • Review by MobileSuitLilah ★★★★

This movie is men staring stoically and emotionally and crying one or more tears as extremely melodramatic events happen around them, and even though it’s way too long it’s so so good

  • Review by KaiserBeamz ★★★½

An epic space opera film that was meant to serve as a relaunching point for the character of Captain Harlock at the start of the 80s. Didn't really take since the anime that followed up on the film was canceled halfway through it's run due to low ratings. But at lest we still have this movie to serve as an excellent on boarding for Harlock as a character and the Matsumotoverse in general.

There are flaws with this movie. Some of the blocking feels very stiff and "TV-like", especially when characters are talking with each other. The character of Emeraldes feels pretty underwritten (I assume because they were saving the real meat of her story for the TV anime). And…
